In general, strip foundations should be 60cm wide and 15cm deep with the foundation hole at a minimum of 1 meter in depth. 

For a single storey, the foundations can be 15cm deep, these sit on top of bricks/blocks that make the total foundation a meter in depth. For buildings that are two storeys tall, strip foundations should ideally be 20cm deep and these will also sit on top of a concrete trench which is 1 meter deep. 

2. Reinforced Concrete 

The concrete should fit with the building codes and requirements for the land which outline the strength, water ratio and aggregate size. It is important to adhere to these standards to ensure the concrete can support the weight of the building above it, withstand changing weather conditions and have a strong water drainage system installed to avoid water-related issues. 

3. Materials

The materials used when building foundations depend on the soil type, local building codes and environment. Some of the most common materials include concrete due to its strength and versatility. Reinforcement usually in the form of steel bars is used to increase the strength of the concrete foundations to improve stability and allow heavy weights to exist above them. Timber and steel piles may be used to strengthen the foundations, depending on the building. 

The regulations may specify different requirements such as dimensions, corrosion resistance, installation methods and spacing. Lastly, waterproofing materials are very important and they usually include waterproofing membranes, drainage systems and moisture prevention, these are important for the longevity of the foundations. 

4. Soil Testing

Soil testing informs the building regulations for foundations, as information about the size, type, reinforcement and depth of the foundations are determined by the soil. Usually, engineers assess the soil to determine the weight capacity, slopes and potential instability. Strip Foundations Explained

Strip foundations are one of the most common shallow foundations used in the UK, especially for houses and low-rise buildings.

What is a strip foundation?

A strip foundation is a continuous concrete footing beneath load-bearing walls. It spreads the wall load over a wider area of ground.

When strip foundations are used

Strip foundations are usually suitable where:

  • Ground conditions are stable and uniform
  • Buildings are low-rise
  • Loads are relatively light

Strip foundation detail and compliance

For compliance, strip foundations must be:

  • Wide enough to spread loads safely
  • Deep enough to manage frost and ground movement
  • Founded on suitable bearing material

Concrete Slab and Wide Foundations

What is a concrete slab foundation?
