How Are Pile Foundations Constructed?

1. Driving Precast Piles
- Precast concrete piles are delivered to site.
- A pile driver or hydraulic hammer drives the pile into the ground until it reaches a layer with suitable bearing capacity—this is known as “refusal.”
- Once at the correct depth, the top of the pile is cut or trimmed to the desired height.
- Multiple piles may be driven and connected using a pile cap.
2. Constructing Bored Piles
- A borehole is drilled to the desired depth using rotary or percussion rigs.
- A steel reinforcement cage is placed inside the hole.
- Concrete is poured to fill the borehole, forming the pile.
- This method creates minimal noise and vibration, making it suitable for built-up areas.
3. Installing Driven and Cast-In-Situ Piles
- A steel casing is driven into the ground.
- Once at depth, concrete is poured into the casing.
- The casing may be left in place or removed, depending on the design.
- These piles combine the advantages of driven speed and cast-in-situ flexibility.
Materials Used for Pile Foundations
Pile foundations can be constructed using various materials depending on structural requirements and ground conditions:
- Concrete (precast or cast-in-place)
- Steel (pipes, H-sections, or casing)
- Timber (used less commonly in modern builds)
- Composite piles (combinations like concrete and steel)
